On Sept. 20, 2017, Hurricane Maria slammed into Puerto Rico and devastated the island's aging and inefficient power grid. Air conditioning couldn't work. Water couldn't be pumped to higher floors. Hospitals couldn't maintain lifesaving machinery. Diesel and propane generators helped, but they're costly and unwieldy and pump noxious fumes into the air.
