The Virden Oil Capitals lost their pre-season opener 4-3 to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League's Estevan Bruins at Tundra Oil & Gas Place. Nash Henwood, Ethan Guthrie and Layton Veitch scored for the Caps who gave up three goals in a 93-second span late in the second period. The Bruins lead 1-0 after the first period and 4-2 after 40 minutes.

Eric Reid made 25 saves in net for Virden. The Oil Capitals will play their second of five exhibition games Tuesday in Portage against the Terriers. Defenseman Ashton Bell of Deloraine and goaltender Kristen Campbell of Brandon are attending Hockey Canada’s National Women’s Team September Camp which begins today in Thorold, Ontario.

Forty-six players will be split into two teams - Red & White - for practices, fitness testing, off-ice sessions and a pair of intrasquad games on Thursday and Saturday. The camp will serve as a critical step towards preparation for international competition throughout the 2023-24 season including the 2024 World Women’s Championship next spring in Utica, New York. Andrew Ladd has announced his retirement after 16 seasons in the National Hockey League.

The 37-year-old Maple Ridge, B.C. native was the first captain of the Jets when the Atlanta Thrashers relocated to Winnipeg in 2011. Ladd recorded 256 goals and 550 points in 1,001 career games with the Jets, Thrashers, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, New York Islanders and Arizona Coyotes.

He won the Stanley Cup with the Hurricanes in 2006 and the Blackhawks in 2010. The Canadian men’s basketball team captured bronze Sunday at the 2023 FIBA World Cup in Manila. Dillon Brooks poured in 39 points and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander added 31 points and 12 assists as Canada defeated the United States 127-118 in overtime in the third place game.

Germany downed Serbia 83-77 in the gold medal game. Tournament MVP Dennis Schroder of the Toronto Raptors had 28 points for Germany. Canada earned silver at the NORCECA Senior Men's Volleyball Continental Championship in Charleston, West Virginia. The United States swept Canada 25-20, 25-14, 25-22 in the gold medal game at the Charleson Coliseum and Convention Center.
