Castaic, Calif. The Big 12 Conference has released its softball preseason team for the 2022 season. Four student-athletes from Oklahoma (Jocelyn Alo, Jayda Coleman, Kinzie Hansen & Tiare Jennings) and Oklahoma State (Hayley Busby, Chyenne Factor, Kelly Maxwell & Kiley Naomi), three from Texas (Mary Iakopo, Janae Jefferson & Shea O’Leary) and one from Iowa State (Mikayla Ramos) comprise the team.
This is the first season in the league’s history in which a preseason team has been composed.The honorees were selected by a vote of the league’s head coaches. Players were picked regardless of position and coaches could not vote for their own student-athletes.Eleven of the 12 honorees were on the 2021 All-Big 12 First or Second Teams.
Six were on the 2021 NFCA (National Fastpitch Coaches Association) All-American teams including three first-team (Alo, Coleman & Jennings), one second-team (Hansen) and two third-team members (Busby & Jefferson).The 2021 Big 12 Player (Alo) and Freshman (Jennings) of the Year are both featured on the team.
Jennings and Jefferson were unanimous selections.Alo was the 2021 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and is a three-time All-Big 12 First Team member (2018, 19, 21). The senior’s 2021 season saw her finish ranked first in Big 12 history in single season home runs (34) and total bases (203) while also being second all-time in batting average (.475) and slugging percentage (1.109) for a year.Jennings comes off an outstanding freshman campaign where she was named the 2021 NFCA/Schutt Sports Division 1 National Freshman of the Year, a 2021 NFCA Unanimous First Team All-American, the 2021 Big 12 Freshman of the Year and a 2021 All-Big 12 First Team selection.
The native of San Pedro, California set the NCAA single-season freshman RBI record (92 in 2021) which ranks 10all-time in NCAA single-season history.Jefferson was named to the 2022 USA Softball Women’s National Team. The senior is a three-time NFCA All-American and the Texas career leader in both batting average (.431) and hits (270).
She led the Longhorns last season in batting average (.446), hits (75), on-base percentage (.495) and stolen bases (14).The 2022 season opens up on February 10 with a full slate of non-conference games.Players listed in alphabetical order by school* - denotes unanimous selection
