A new report from the State Board of Education in Washington indicates that charter school students in the state are performing as well as or better than their peers in traditional public schools. The report highlights that Black and Hispanic students, English learners, and those from low-income backgrounds are achieving higher academic outcomes in charter schools compared to traditional public schools. The data from the 2022-2023 school year shows significant improvements in English language arts and math for most student groups attending charter schools. Washington currently has 18 charter schools with around 5,000 students enrolled, a small fraction of the total public school population of about one million students in the state.
