The United States is facing increasing strain on its aging energy infrastructure due to a rise in extreme weather events. Data from Climate Central shows that since 2000, there have been 2,194 major power outages reported to the U.S. Department of Energy, with 80% attributed to weather-related incidents. Severe weather accounts for 58% of these outages, followed by winter storms at 23%, and tropical cyclones or hurricanes at 14%. Idaho, despite not being known for severe weather, has experienced occasional significant power outages due to severe weather events like thunderstorms and wind. The region has reported only 11 major power outages since 2000. While the Boise area experiences regional power outages occasionally, large-scale outages are less common, with the average Idaho Power customer experiencing less than three hours without power per year.
