The federal immigrant detention center in Tacoma experienced at least six, possibly seven, suicide attempts in less than three months this year. The University of Washington Center for Human Rights shared audio and records of 911 calls from Jan. 1 to March 18, revealing incidents of individuals attempting suicide through hanging or asphyxiation. The records indicate that some detainees made multiple attempts within a short period, with one case suggesting a seventh attempt not documented in the received records. Staff at the detention center reported distressing incidents involving detainees from various countries attempting suicide, highlighting concerning mental health challenges faced by individuals in immigration detention.
