Pepco has partnered with over 244 local nonprofits in the District of Columbia and Maryland. Washington City Paper is seeking support from readers to execute their plans for the remainder of 2023. Scream, a band that originated from D.C.'s hardcore punk scene in the early '80s, released a new album called D.C. Special after a 30-year hiatus. The album was inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic and features guest musicians including former drummer Dave Grohl. Roughly 750 staff members at The Washington Post are on strike, but leadership plans to keep the paper running during this time. D.C.'s Youth Services Center is adding 10 additional beds due to overcrowding concerns caused by an increase in youth arrests for violent crimes. WMATA is making cuts at Metro stations across the city due to budget restrictions, resulting in reduced station manager staffing at certain stations starting January 1, 2024. GOP Rep. James Comer of Kentucky expressed support for fully legalizing and taxing marijuana sales in D.C., which has been blocked by Republicans in Congress for years through a budget rider. Mayor Muriel Bowser secured this commitment from Comer during a closed-door meeting where she also requested federal assistance on other matters such as confirming additional judges for D.C. courts. Ward 3 Councilmember Matt Frumin is backing a bill to ensure that D.C. students have access to out-of-school-time programs by 2035, as there is currently a shortage of over 50,000 seats in these programs.
