Malik Cornelius, a 16-year-old from New Orleans, has been transferred to adult court and pleaded not guilty to the second-degree murder of Jacob Carter, a bagel shop owner from Tacoma, Washington. Cornelius faces a $600,000 bond and was arrested in January after being picked up on unrelated charges. The incident occurred at an intersection near the French Quarter, where Carter was shot while on vacation with his husband. A blue car believed to be connected to Cornelius was recovered from Bayou St. John. Carter co-owned Howdy Bagel in Tacoma since 2020. Cornelius's next court appearance is scheduled for August.
