The aquarium building at Chester Zoo, in operation since 1952, will be closing for good in 2026. The closure is due to advancements in building methods and technology, prompting the aquatic species housed there to find new habitats within the zoo. The decision was communicated to Chester Zoo members through a letter, which highlighted the development of other aquatic habitats across the zoo over the past 25 years. Chester Zoo, spanning 128 acres, is home to over 31,000 animals and various exhibits beyond the aquarium, such as the nature reserve and Asiatic lion habitat.
