A A+ A++ A+++
Three second-generation immigrants in Portland are behind the creation of Above Grnd, the city's first Somali-owned late-night coffee shop located above a sneaker store in the Old Town neighborhood. Co-owner Ahlam Osman, along with her friend Mehamed Ali and brother Abdulrahim Osman, saw an opportunity to combine their love for coffee and sneakers by opening this unique establishment. The menu at Above Grnd reflects their East African heritage with offerings like banana and date lattes infused with traditional spices. Despite their young age and lack of formal business education, the trio has successfully established a welcoming community space that embraces diversity through various activities like board games and artist collaborations.
