A wildfire near the Washington-Oregon border grew out of control, prompting thousands to evacuate as it expanded rapidly due to strong winds and high temperatures. The Nakia Creek Fire started on Oct. 9 near Vancouver, Washington, and quickly escalated in size from 156 acres to about 2,000 acres. Residents of over 2,900 homes were issued evacuation notices, with more told to be prepared to leave. Unseasonably warm temperatures fueled the fire, with some areas experiencing record highs. The Pacific Northwest is facing continued fire weather conditions with above-average temperatures expected for the next few days before rain arrives over the weekend. Oregon has also been dealing with ongoing wildfire threats in recent weeks.
