Anniston has a population of 77690. 45.9% of Anniston’s inhabitants are Male, and 54.1 are female. 40.1% of Anniston is married and 61.1% own their own home. The Average Home price is $112,857, and the average rent is $734. Household median income in Anniston is $41,366, and the individual median income is $22,997. Anniston’s Ethnic is the following: Black(52.3%), White(43.8%), Hispanic(3.8%), Multiple(2.5%), Asian(0.8%), Native(0.3%), Other(0.2%).
PCBs were produced in Anniston from 1929 to 1971, initially as the Swann Chemical Company. In 1935 Monsanto Industrial Chemicals Co. bought the plant and took over production. In 1969, the plant was discharging about 250 pounds of the chemicals into Snow Creek per day, according to internal company documents.In 2002, an investigation by 60 Minutes revealed Anniston had been among the most toxic cities in the country.
The primary source of local contamination was a Monsanto chemical factory, which had already been closed. The EPA description of the site reads in part: The Anniston PCB site consists of residential, commercial, and public properties located in and around Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama, that contain or may contain hazardous substances, including polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) impacted media.
The Site is not listed on the NPL, but is considered to be a NPL-caliber site. Solutia Inc.'s Anniston plant encompasses approximately 70 acres (28 ha) of land and is located about 1 mile west of downtown Anniston, Alabama. The plant is bounded to the north by the Norfolk Southern and Erie railroads, to the east by Clydesdale Avenue, to the west by First Avenue, and to the south by Highway 202.
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were produced at the plant from 1929 until 1971.
