Alabama State Route 35 passes through Powell, leading northwest 15 miles (24 km) to Scottsboro and southeast through Rainsville 13 miles (21 km) to Fort Payne, the DeKalb County seat. According to the U.S.
Census Bureau, Powell has a total area of 5.0 square miles (12.9 km2), all land.
