Region/state roundup: State girls volleyball champion First Colonial player, coach gain top Class 5

State champion First Colonial collected the top VHSL Class 5 honors announced Monday.

Senior libero Kayla Foley was the Player of the Year, and Edie Magula was the Coach of the Year.

Foley, 5-foot-4, has committed to play for Michigan State. She finished the season with 406 digs, 55 aces, and 89 assists, averaging 4.95 digs and 1.09 assists per set, and got 96% of her serves in play. She was on the American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America second team.

As the Chicago Romans boys varsity hockey team celebrated their opening goal in a game against the Evanston High School Hockey boys varsity team at Robert Crown Community Center on Nov. 1, a line of Wildkits began to form at the Evanston bench. When all five of the Wildkits on the ice joined the line, it glided over to goalie Caleb Gerstein, and the pick-me-ups ensued.
