Letter: Can America continue under a “divided house?”

Our Gospel reading on a recent Sunday was taken from Mark 3:20-35. What got me thinking were versus 24 and 25. “If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand.”

On June 16, 1858, more than 1,000 delegates met in Springfield, Illinois, for the Republican State Convention. At 5 p.m., they chose Abraham Lincoln as their candidate for the U.S. Senate, running against Democrat Stephen A. Douglas.
