SEOUL, June 1 (Yonhap) -- South Korean major league veteran Choi Ji-man has chosen to exercise his opt-out clause, parting ways with the New York Mets to become a free agent, the team announced Saturday.

In February, Choi signed a "split contract" with the Mets, which included an opt-out clause but did not guarantee him a spot in the major leagues.

The 33-year-old player will officially become a free agent and seek opportunities with other teams when the Mets completes the paperwork Sunday.
