ZANESVILLE — In 1788, white settlers landed at the mouth of the Muskingum River. They had travelled over land from New England to Pittsburgh, where they boarded flat-bottomed boats and travelled down the Ohio, lured by the promise of a vast wilderness known as the Northwest Territory, ceded by the British following the Revolutionary War.

On Lake Erie three ferries bridge the water. Two with massive, car-hauling vessels powered by multiple diesel engines. Another carries foot traffic only, speeding on massive catamarans powered by Deutz diesel water jets.
