First Lutheran Church in Beach City struck by lightning, steeple damaged

BEACH CITY – Lighting struck the First Lutheran Church and toppled the tip of its tall steeple Thursday.

Rev. Stephen Patrick said the lightning split the steeple open and knocked down the tip, leaving burned marks and charred debris.

The church at 230 W. Main Street was built in the 1880s. It features a distinctive red door and steeple.

Patrick said the storm also knocked out power to the church but he does not expect to cancel Sunday service.
