ROCK CREEK, Ohio--On a steamy Sunday afternoon in Ashtabula county, hundreds flee to the thirteenth century to beat the heat.

The 23rd annual Great Lakes Medieval Faire is in full Renaissance mode, with lords and ladies, faeries and sprites, mermaids, pirates and Vikings.

Donna Gayle Horning, dressed in a flowing white gown and satin wings, greets visitors at the entrance gate. More fairy godmother than ticket-taker, the 12-year faire veteran acts as though she's answering the door to her enchanted palace.
