Key moments in Adamstown's history

Founding of a town

Historians trace the founding of Adamstown to a surveying trip William Addams took the area in 1736, when he found a spot for him and his wife to live.

Addams soon set up a grist mill, an operation helped by the abundance of springs in the area.

On July 4, 1761, Addams formally executed his plan to divide the area into 57 building lots for a town originally called Adamsburry. It was located on the site of what is thought to be a former Native American village.
